Design Computation Consultancy

WEsearch Lab combines creative input from architects and designers with advanced AI and parametric technologies to explore, analyse, optimise and rationalise design proposals.

Our unique in-house developed processes have been used to deliver projects of national importance such as the new Parliament building of India, Bharat Mandapam (the venue of G20), and Yashobhoomi (India's largest convention centre).

We use Python to develop custom Grasshopper plugins, custom APIs and AI workflows. These processes have been rigorously fine-tuned through peer-reviewed research paper publications at international design computation conferences such as eCAADe, CAAD Futures and CAADRIA. The processes have been further examined through workshops at institutes such as MIT, University of Southern California, IIT Kharagpur, etc.

Tool Development + Workshops

Alongside consultancy, WEsearch Lab specialises in tool development and conducting workshops. We are currently focused on two AI projects. The first, SAFE or NOT, uses photographs to predict the perceived safety of neighbourhoods. The second, Site Safety AI, leverages CCTV footage to detect compliance with safety gear requirements at construction sites.

We have released free Grasshopper plugins: Eelish, which automates column-beam placement on floor plans, and Chingree, which generates Piet Mondrian-inspired 3D massing.

WEsearch Lab has also conducted over 50 national and international workshops, training professionals and students in the latest advancements in parametric design and AI. In 2022, we introduced the first-ever credit-based course on the use of AI in Architecture in India at CEPT University, Ahmedabad.

TEDx — Architecture for Everyone Joy Mondal, 2016

Joy Mondal

Joy Mondal founded WEsearch Lab in 2015 with the vision of empowering social equity through the innovative use of technology in the conception of and right to space. This vision is encapsulated in his 2016 TEDx talk, “Architecture for Everyone,” where he discussed democratising access to design consultancy through automation of design conception. Since WEsearch Lab’s inception, Joy has steered its growth by leading design computation consultancy for projects of national significance, developing award-winning design computation tools, and tutoring workshops in all the continents of the world.

Joy completed B.Arch from Jadavpur University, Kolkata in 2012. During his studies, he won design competitions organised by IIT Roorkee and IIT Mumbai, and secured second runner-up in the Transparence design competition. After graduation, he worked at Studio Symbiosis and AECOM.

To materialise the goal of advancing computational literacy among future architects, he is engaged as a visiting faculty at the School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi and CEPT University in Ahmedabad. He also sits on the Advisory Board at MIT ADT University in Pune, helping to develop a new Master’s program in AI in Architecture.

On the research front, Joy won the inaugural Saint-Gobain Scholarship in 2012 for developing a climate analysis plugin. His AI-enabled research on the detection of design plagiarism has been recognised at the Indian Institute of Architects’ (IIA) Excellence in Architecture Award in 2022. He has also served as a paper reviewer on the scientific committee of international conferences such as eCAADe, CAADRIA, ASCAAD, and SIGraDi. Joy is currently a Design-x-Design Sanskriti Fellow, continuing his innovative research in the field.
